ACS Honors J. Nørskov for Creative Catalysis

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has awarded Jens K. Nørskov (Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby near Copenhagen; DTU) its Gabor A. Somorjai Prize for his creative catalysis research. He is thus recognized for his outstanding achievements in this area, and in particular for his work to develop a quantitative catalysis theory for reactions such as CO hydrogenation on surfaces. He recently reported in Angewandte Chemie on trends in catalysis of CO oxidation with nano-particles,[l] and also on the role of the surface modification of palladium catalysts for selective acetylene hydrogenation.[2]

Nørskov studied chemistry and physics at the University of Aarhus and completed his doctorate in theoretical physics there in 1979 under
B. I. Lundqvist. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Aarhus, at IBM in Yorktown Heights, NY (USA), and with the Danish catalyst manufacturer Haldor Topsøe. In 1987 he was made research professor at the DTU, and he has been professor for theoretical physics there since 1992.

He has been a visiting researcher in the USA on numerous occasions, for example at the University of California in Santa Barbara and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Nørskov is a member of the international advisory board of ChemCatChem, the new sister journal of Angewandte Chemie.

Prelog Medal for M. Shibasaki

Masakatsu Shibasaki (University of Tokyo) received the Prelog Medal from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich in recognition of his extraordinary achievements in the development of new catalysts for the efficient asymmetric synthesis of active compounds; his award lecture concentrated on asymmetric two-center catalysis. He reported in Angewandte Chemie on Brønsted base catalysis using lanthanum aryloxides supported by bidentate Lewis basic phosphine oxides,[1] and in the special issue honoring Ryoji Noyori in Chemistry–An Asian Journal, he described the catalytic asymmetric epoxidation of a ,b -unsaturated phosphine oxides with an yttrium propoxide biphenyldiol complex.[2]

Shibasaki completed his doctoral studies in 1974 with S. Yamada at the University of Tokyo and subsequently worked with E. J. Corey as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. He returned to Japan in 1977 as Associate Professor at Teikyo University. He moved to the Sagami Research Center as a group leader in 1983 and later as Professor to Hokkaido University (1986) before returning to the University of Tokyo as Professor in 1991. Shibasaki’s research concentrates on asymmetric catalysis and the synthesis of biologically active compounds. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Chemistry–A European Journal and of the International Advisory Board of Chemistry–An Asian Journal.
