ЗА РУБЕЖОМ

В ФРГ образована структура ConNeCat, объединяющая химиков-каталитиков по инновационно-ориентированным направлениям катализа. Ниже мы приводим первое сообщение о создании этого нового объединения.

Competence Network Catalysis ConNeCat

About ConNeCat

The BMBF (German Federal Ministry for Education and Research) has started an initiative for the encouragement of innovation-oriented research in the field of catalysis in Germany. The Competence Network Catalysis ConNeCat was founded to close the gap between short term industrial R&D and basic research in universities and other research institutions. The BMBF supports ConNeCat in two ways: Firstly by financing an organizational framework: network costs including a secretariat, to improve dialogue and contact both between and within industry and non-industrial research facilities. Secondly by co-funding outstanding research projects (see below).

Tasks and aims

ConNeCat will assist in coordinating and optimising (pre-competitive) research in catalysis. The project's main tasks and aims are:

  • Encouragement of cooperation between industrial and non-industrial research institutions.
  • Merging chemists, other natural scientists and engineers in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Provision of a virtual and real platform for rapid exchange of information.
  • Working towards improved recognition of the importance of catalysis.
  • Improvement of education in the field of catalysis.
  • Enhancement of cooperation and collaboration with other European organisations and institutions involved in research in catalysis.

Structure and Activities

Management Board
Policy and strategy are set by a management board comprising 9 representatives of industry and non-industrial research institutions. In a consituent plenary meeting in May 2000 eight members were elected:

Prof. Keim (RWTH Aachen)
Prof. Emig (University of Erlangen-Nuneberg)
Prof. Muhler (Ruhr-University Bochum)
Prof. Weitkamp (University Stuttgart)
Prof. Schmidt (Sud Chemie, Bruckmuhl)
Dr. Prescher (Degussa-Huls AG, Hanau)
Dr. Caspary (Krupp Uhde GmbH, Dortmund)
Dr. Konig (Volkswagen AG, Wolfsburg)
(One industrial member not yet elected)

Membership in ConNeCat

Members of ConNeCat are industrial companies and non-industrial research institutes highly competent in the field of catalysis as well as companies applying catalysis. There is no personal membership. Members of ConNeCat should be resident in Germany.

Plenary Meetings - Status Quo

The plenary meetings take place at least once a year. They cover fundamental topics and activities. Every two years a workshop for presentation and evaluation of the state of the art of funded projects will be organized, coupled with a plenary meeting.

Research Projects

A number of high priority "lighthouse" projects have already been defined dependent on industrial needs and on the basis of outline proposals of the members and other will follow. Ad-hoc-committees to coordinate preparation of these projects have been appointed by the management board. After evaluation by an international committee (still to be appointed) the projects will be proposed for co-funding by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

First Research Projects

Presently, four themes for lighthouse projects have been fixed and ad-hoc-commissions are appointed:

  • "Catalysis in fuel cell systems"
  • "Selective Oxidation"
  • "Membranes/Membrane-Reactors in Catalysis"
  • "Advanced Characterisation Methods"

Other themes for lighthouse projects will follow.

Organisation and Contact

ConNeCat is organized as a "not-for-profitУ network, financed by the BMBF. It operates pre-competitive in accordance with its rules of procedure.

Assistance on all matters affecting ConNeCat is provided by DECHEMA Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V. (Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology).

New Journal of American Chemical Society

We are pleased to enclose the complimentary and premier issue of Nano Letters, the exciting, new letters journal published by ACS Publications. Edited by A. Paul Alivisatos, Chancellor's Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science, University of California, Berkeley, Nano Letters is a central forum for scientists involved in nanoscale research, including physical and materials chemistry, biotechnology, and applied physics.

Nano Letters is published monthly in print and continuously on the Web. Articles are made available online within 24 to 48 hours of being peer-reviewed, edited and approved for release by the authors
- weeks ahead of the print edition - ensuring access to the latest research as soon as it becomes available utilizing ACS' own Articles ASAPSM (As Soon as Publishable) technology. (Note: articles for the second issue are already available online!)

We trust you will find Nano Letters to be an essential resource in your chemical sciences collection. We are excited to offer you and your colleagues FREE online access to Nano Letters now through June 30, 2001, by going directly to the Nano Letters website at http://pubs.acs.org/nanolett.

To subscribe to Nano Letters, please contact your agent, the ACS Account Manager assigned to your territory (go to http://pubs.acs.org/liblink), or call our Member and Subscriber Services department at 614-447-3776 or by e-mail service@acs.org.
